Polish stoneware
It's all about shape and color!

Extraordinary Design & Durability

Unique to traditional Polish stoneware patterns are "eyespot" designs inspired by the peacock feather.  These blue and green eyespots and variations are classically arranged on the pieces and are distinctive to the Silesian region of Europe.  Beautiful new designs also are created each year by the ceramic artists!
Excellent craftmanship is the hallmark of Polish stoneware. Each piece is an individual creation- no two pieces are exactly alike. A uniform color palette in the various patterns allows the collector to easily mix and match Polish pottery patterns.

Created from native white clay and fired in coal and gas ovens at temperatures in excess of 1350 degrees centigrade with a lead-free glaze, Polish stoneware is safe for use in the dishwasher, microwave and oven! It is non-toxic and impervious to abrasives. As an extremely durable stoneware, it will not crack or chip easily and is a wonderful combination of beauty and function. It is distinguished by its clean lines and captivating hand-stamped designs in cobalt blue, peacock blue, forest green and earth tones. Newer decorations are now also available in a wide color palette.

Letter to Customers

"...The unique (Unikat) patterns are designs which are produced in minimal quantities- just a few or a few dozen sets. The shape of each stamp is unique so when it is worn we search out another one with a very similar shape and size. The unique patterns are expression of continuous searching for the best integration of form and decoration. Therefore the extremely important element is selection of stamp or sponge, which emphasize the shape of the product. Stamps and unique patterns created by designers cannot be usually copied - they are too sophisticated in their intricate patterns and weaves, but when they make stamp simplification, some of the decorations are then implemented into (regular line) production. Currently in Ceramika Artystyczna there are produced a few hundred new original patterns, and not big amount of dishes, which refer to the former achievements of the Lower Silesia's ceramics from the turn of the 19th-20th century. Therefore rich traditions of Boleslawiec potters find here continuators that add, with their creation, another sheet to the history of Boleslawiec pottery." - from Ceramika Artystyczna's Letter to Customers

History

Polish stoneware, formerly called Bunzlauer stoneware, originated as a folk art in the early 1800's.  It was crafted in Bunzlau in the German province of Silesia, now part of Poland.   With early decorations inspired by the peacock feather, farmers in the region created the first pieces of this durable and distinctive tableware.
During World War II, many of the potteries were destroyed,
but after the war, the factories were rebuilt and the region continues its tradition as a major pottery center of Europe.

Today in the small village of Boleslawiec (pronounced Bowl-es-WAH-veetz), Poland, skilled ceramic artists individually handcraft and handpaint each piece using sponge stamping techniques and free-hand design with the same pride and care used over a century ago, preserving the charm of this old Central European folk art.  Antique Bunzlauer stoneware can be seen in museums, antique shops and private collections throughout Europe.

Authenticity

Our goal is to offer only the finest quality Polish stoneware from Boleslawiec. We offer only FIRST- QUALITY pieces and beautiful designs from Ceramika Artystyczna! (White stickers on the bottom of the pieces denote first quality.) While all the ceramic factories in Boleslawiec produce beautiful and unique pieces, the ceramic artists employed by Ceramika Artystyczna (translated: Artistic Ceramics) produce exquisite designs and extraordinarily high quality pottery. Ceramika Artystyczna continues this unique folk art under the direction of Artistic Director and Designer Mr. Bronislaw Wolanin, and Form Designer Mr. Mariusz Ochocki, both graduates of the Wroclaw Academy of Fine Arts where the decorations for the first products were created.

Ceramika Artystyczna has won numerous awards for artistic design and quality. There is a difference in Polish stoneware: this particular pottery is made of whiter, denser clay and incorporates more intricate designs and shapes. The quality of Ceramika Artystyczna's glazing is unsurpassed. All pieces have the artist's initials or are signed by the artists. The coffee pot with castle mark on the bottom of each piece (or the former mark of castle with "B" on top) represents pottery from Ceramika Artystyczna.

Interestingly, 70% of Ceramika Artystyczna's workers are women, including the president. The factory is a cooperative - all the profits are shared by the employees.

I am proud to be able to offer only the highest quality Polish pottery, produced by Ceramika Artystyczna. Wild Rose Pottery is dedicated to offering a variety of styles and patterns that reflect the extraordinary beauty of Boleslawiec's finest pottery!

About Wild Rose Pottery

I started my little company in May, 1999 (my web site officially debuted in January 2000) because I had fallen in love with Polish pottery and at that time it was practically impossible to find in the U.S.! I wanted to share my excitement and passion for the individuality, strength of form and function of this incredible pottery.

An addition to our web site, Wild Rose Collections, features Ekelund Swedish tablecloths, Swedish Dala horses and perhaps other unique offerings in the future.

In a world where mediocrity in product quality is often the norm, we are proud to offer exceptional products. Thank you for allowing us to share them with you! I also appreciate your telling a friend about our web site and am happy to ship anywhere in the U.S.

We may not be the biggest or the newest (in fact we are among the oldest internet retailers offering Ceramika Artystyczna stoneware,) nor do we have the fanciest website (we built our web site by hand and still use old-style html coding!) but we've always been dedicated to personal service and offering a great variety of always 1st Quality pieces from the gifted artists at Ceramika Artystyczna.

Iowa Wild Rose

The 26th Iowa General Assembly designated the Wild Rose as the official state flower in 1897. It was chosen for the honor because it was one of the decorations used on the silver service which the state presented to the battleship USS Iowa that same year. Wild Roses are found throughout the state and bloom from June through September in rural areas - along sunny country roads and bordering fencelines.
