History and Tradition
Ekelund's long history in textile production is traced to family ancestor Ingemar Larsson, born in 1660. Ingemar's business of providing raw materials to the local population in Boras, who in turn spun the yarn and wove it into finished product, was the beginning of textile activity that can be traced through each subsequent generation in the Ekelund family. The business was geographically centered in Sweden's Viskan river valley and surrounding countryside. Flax and wool were woven on simple handlooms where the technique gradually became more refined and the method of weaving complicated patterns reached perfection in the Horred district. Knowledge and traditions were passed on through each generation as the business expanded.
Sweden's Viskan valley, called the "Cradle of Textiles," supplied the entire country with most of its textiles in the 19th century and first half of the 20th century. Almost all of the textile factories located there could trace their origins back to Ingemar Larsson's original textile business.
Despite the entrance into the market of cheaper imported goods,
Ekelund's use of both traditional and innovative weaving techniques and insistance on excellence in all facets of production seperates the Ekelund product from all others.
